The Akumals

The Akumals, Quintana Roo, Mexico is one of most fascinating places in the Yucatan – culturally speaking. The “mega-highway” of Mexico 307 divides the small tourist resort community of Akumal with the small Mexican city of Akumal Centro.

The resort community of Akumal offers Eco-reserve, eco-tourism, white beaches, fancy, all-inclusive resorts, beach houses, English speakers, more expats than you can count, a bustling local economy, a bustling foreign economy, yoga, fried street food, and expensive wifi.

Just cross Mexico Highway 307 and you get the small Mexican city of Akumal Centro with its pesos wifi,

The AkumalsSpanish speakers, gringo food, authentic food, nightly street bazaars, booming local music, shared smiles, shared stares, …

It is a world of dichotomy, separated by a highway. Together, you get everything. Each would most likely die without the other. The Akumals.

AKUMAL: A MUST-STOP-THERE DESTINATION

I’ve been to the Yucatan six times–loved it every time. And, Akumal has been a must-stop-there destination. At first, we didn’t know about the “other Akumal” across Hwy 307, but when the small quasi-grocery stores on the the Caribbean side of the highway did not have something we needed, we took the walkway over the highway to the “Mexican” side of Akumal, and there, sure enough, we found just what we needed in a crowded little variety store with a friendly, helpful proprietor. We communicated just find in our broken Spanish and his broken English. Then, we discovered the internet cafe–in the days before every hotel had wifi–and that it was much less expensive than the “American” Akumal. I love that two different communities are so close to each other.
